The Polk County Community
Polk County was established in 1861, and it’s believed that the county was named for U.S. President James K. Polk whose 1845 inauguration was on the day after Florida became a state.
New towns like Lakeland, Lake Wales and Winter Haven developed after the South Florida Railroad came through in 1884, allowing people to travel quickly from Jacksonville to Tampa. In the latter part of the last century, Polk County’s economy focused on the shipment of Phosphate rock for fertilizer, as well as cattle, citrus and farming.Today, Polk County has become the state’s newest hot spot for business, with LEGOLand, CSX and an Amazon fulfillment center based here. Part of the appeal for businesses is that the area is centrally located between Tampa and Orlando, and Polk County provides an excellent blend of connectivity, workforce talent and low operating costs. The area has also become a relocation destination for overseas companies who are attracted to the pro-business atmosphere.
